Muitas vezes escutamos por aí sobre Galileu ter sido “torturado e humilhado como o pior dos descrentes” por sustentar a teoria de Copérnico. Também se ouve sobre os “teólogos ferozes” perseguindo os cientistas com a Bíblia em uma mão e uma tocha na outra. Essas afirmações têm um quê de humor, mas existem pessoas que realmente acreditam nisso. Esses tipos de mitos só perduram pensamentos e posturas intolerantes tanto contra a ciência quanto contra as religiões em geral.
Vamos entender como aconteceu o processo inquisitório de Galileu para que possamos tirar algumas conclusões. Tudo começou quando Galileu publica algumas descobertas feitas com seu telescópio (como sobre o relevo da Lua, as manchas do Sol e as luas de Júpiter) em 1610 e 1613 e com isso, surge o anti-copernicanismo. Todos os argumentos contra Galileu usavam da Bíblia como base. O que Galileu fez vai te fazer rir um pouco… Em 1613, ele envia uma carta a Benedetto Castelli e a duquesa Christina de Lorena utilizando argumentos bíblicos para refutar os argumentos (também bíblicos) sobre o copernicanismo. Nem um pouco esperto né?
Mas essas cartas provocaram mais ainda os conservadores da época, então em 1615, o frade dominicano Niccolo Lorini apresentou uma denúncia formal de Galileu para a Inquisição. A investigação dura 1 ano, mas ele é absolvido por falta de provas. Se você pensa que parou por aí, não se engane, porque essa história está só começando…
Ao invés de simplesmente permanecer na dele, já que havia sido absolvido, Galileu decide nesse mesmo ano, ir a Roma (por livre e espontânea vontade, presta atenção na audácia) para defender a teoria copernicana. Por isso, em fevereiro de 1616, recebe uma advertência oral do cardeal Belarmino e fica proibido de sustentar publicamente ou defender a ideia de que a Terra se movia.
Galileu fica anos sem falar sobre a teoria, mas em 1632 publica o Diálogo, que se resumia em uma conversa entre três personagens discutindo sobre aspectos cosmológicos, astronômicos, físicos e filosóficos do copernicanismo. Ele afirmava que o livro não possuía nada que defendia seus ideais (mesmo que defendesse, já falei que ele era audacioso?), assim, os opositores usaram o livro para fazer a acusação sobre Galileu dizendo que o livro violava o acordo feito com o cardeal.
Ele foi processado pela Inquisição e convocado a comparecer em Roma para julgamento, que começou em abril de 1633. Galileu foi condenado por “veemente suspeita de heresia” e teve que ler a abjuração formal que retirava suas crenças, com isso, foi condenado a prisão domiciliar.
Na sentença de Galileu, consta que ele passou por um “exame rigoroso”, termo usado pela Inquisição para se referir a tortura, que foi o que muitos concluíram ao ler a sentença. Mas cerca de 150 anos após a tese de que Galileu havia ido para prisão e 250 anos após a tese da tortura, vários documentos vieram à tona e mostraram que Galileu não sofreu nenhuma delas.
Com a exceção de três dias (21 – 24 de junho de 1633), Galileu nunca foi aprisionado (como era o costume universal) ou após sua sentença (que era para ser feito). Quanto ao fato de Galileu ter sido torturado, as evidências não batem. Galileu possuía 69 anos durante o julgamento e conforme os documentos datam, ele teria sido “torturado” no dia 21 de junho, mas convenhamos… Quem iria torturar um idoso e ninguém perceberia no dia seguinte? Sem sentido. Ele teria sido capaz de participar da sentença e da abjuração no dia 22 de junho? Óbvio que não.
As normas da Inquisição obrigavam os torturadores a registrarem as sessões de tortura, e isso não consta nos documentos sobre o caso de Galileu. Então apesar de permanecer em prisão domiciliar durante o julgamento e pelos nove anos seguintes de sua vida, Galileu nunca foi para prisão propriamente dita.
Outra coisa que deve ser levada em conta: o contexto científico que Galileu vivia. Naquele momento, a briga científica para ver qual era o melhor sistema (heliocêntrico ou geocêntrico) respingou muito no processo de Galileu. Muitos que eram contra ele, não era pelo fato de estar ofendendo a Igreja ou algo assim, mas pelos seus argumentos fortalecerem a teoria de Copérnico.
Precisamos entender outro fato ainda… Galileu possuía proteção, status de celebridade e o amor do papa Urbano que era um antigo admirador. Sendo amigo do Papa da época e com toda a fama que possuía, será que seriam capazes de fazer algum mal como tortura e prisão a ele? Fica o questionamento. Nada que a Igreja (e a Inquisição) fez em nome da religião deve ser apagado, mas o mito sobre o caso de Galileu só alimenta mais ainda posturas intolerantes.
